From the 10th to the 16th of Mahuru, Riccarton High School will be celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.
Māori Language Week is an annual celebration of Māori culture and heritage here in Aotearoa. With this year’s theme of “Kia Kaha te Reo Māori” – “Let’s make the Māori language strong”, the school will be celebrating later in the week, but in the meantime here are some Māori phrases you can use with your friends:
kiriāhua – selfie
pūrere – device
Ki a au tō pūhihiko? Kua mate taku waea. – Can I borrow your charger? My phone is dead.
Kaua e Whakamā! Kia Kaha! – Don’t Be Shy! Give it a Try!
Or if you feel like a challenge, it’s not too late to take part in the Mahuru Māori challenge, where your goal is to speak only te Reo Māori for the month of Mahuru – September.
And remember; Ahakoa iti, ākona, kōrerotia – learn a little, use a little.
